A buying guide to erection rings
How do erection rings work, and which one should you choose?
Published by FirmTech Last updated: November 2026
Erection rings work by putting gentle pressure at the base of the penis, so blood that flows in during an erection drains out more slowly and the erection stays firmer for longer.
That is the whole answer to how do erection rings work: a mechanical effect that lasts only while the ring is on, with no pills and no waiting. The ED Ring Guide, published by FirmTech, helps you choose between FirmTech's three doctor-designed rings: the $60 Performance Ring, the $60 MaxPR and the $275 TechRing, which also measures your erections.
Which erection ring should I choose?
Start with what you want the ring to do. If you want firmer, longer erections and nothing else, the Performance Ring is the simple choice. If you want the strongest hold, the MaxPR is FirmTech's tightest ring. If you also want data on your sexual health, only the TechRing measures. All three fit up to 5.5 inches of erect girth and are HSA/FSA eligible.

What is an erection ring?
Definition: an erection ring is a soft band worn at the base of the penis, and in many designs behind the testicles, that slows blood from leaving the penis during an erection. You may also see it called a penis ring, cock ring, constriction ring, tension ring or ED ring.
The rings covered in The ED Ring Guide are FirmTech's. They are designed with urologists, made from medical-grade elastomer that is latex-free and phthalate-free, and use an anatomical peno-scrotal fit: one loop goes under the testicles and the other around the base of the penis, which FirmTech says spreads pressure evenly. A hook-and-latch strap lets you set the tension yourself, so there is no size to choose.
Rings help an erection you can already get. They do not create one, which is why men who cannot get an erection at all usually pair a ring with a vacuum pump or talk to a doctor about medicine. Read whether erectile dysfunction rings work for you for the fuller answer.
How do erection rings work, step by step?
An erection depends on blood vessels, hormones and nerves working together. Arousal opens the arteries that fill the penis with blood, and veins drain it back out. A ring sits over the base and slows that drainage without blocking ejaculation. Putting a FirmTech ring on takes a few seconds:
- Open. Unhook the latch and open the loops. You can do this while soft, ahead of time.
- Place. Drop the testicles through one loop, then bring the other loop around the base of the penis.
- Adjust. Fasten the strap so it feels snug but not tight. Start looser and tighten over several uses.
- Time it. Keep to the stated wear time: up to 12 hours for the Performance Ring and TechRing, up to 90 minutes for the MaxPR. Remove it at once if you feel pain or numbness.
Many other ring makers advise much shorter sessions; Manual reports that most recommend no longer than 20 to 30 minutes (Manual). Our guide to erection ring side effects explains the difference.

Common questions
- How do erection rings work?
- Erection rings work by putting gentle, even pressure at the base of the penis. During an erection, blood flows in through arteries and drains out through veins; the ring slows the outflow so the erection stays firmer for longer. The effect is mechanical and lasts only while the ring is on, so it works from the first use without pills or waiting. More in the FAQ
- Do erectile dysfunction rings work?
- Erectile dysfunction rings can work well for men who can get an erection but struggle to keep it, because they hold blood that is already there. They do not create an erection on their own. Men who cannot get an erection at all usually need another option, such as prescription medicine or a vacuum pump used with a ring, so a doctor's view helps. More in the FAQ
- Which FirmTech ring should I choose?
- Choose the Performance Ring ($60) for firmer, longer erections with a comfortable fit and no tech. Choose the MaxPR ($60) for the tightest fit and most intensity, worn up to 90 minutes. Choose the TechRing ($275) if you also want data on every session and every night. All three fit up to 5.5 inches of erect girth. More in the FAQ
- What size ED ring do I need?
- For FirmTech rings, you do not pick a size. All three fit up to 5.5 inches (14 cm) of erect girth and adjust with a hook-and-latch strap; FirmTech says one size fits 95% of men. Other makers, especially of pump tension rings, sell numbered sizes, so always check that maker's own chart. More in the FAQ
- How long can you wear an erection ring?
- It depends on the ring. Healthline advises no more than 20 minutes at a time, and Manual says most makers recommend 20 to 30 minutes. FirmTech lists different limits for its own designs: up to 12 hours for the Performance Ring and TechRing, and up to 90 minutes for the MaxPR. Follow the instructions for the ring you own. - Are ED rings HSA or FSA eligible?
- FirmTech's TechRing, Performance Ring and MaxPR are HSA/FSA eligible, including bundles that pair them. Accessories, protection plans and shipping are not. Your plan administrator has the final say on what it covers, so check with your plan if you are unsure about your account. More in the FAQ
- Where can I buy erectile dysfunction rings?
- You can buy FirmTech rings online at getfirmtech.com, which sells nationwide, or find doctors, men's health clinics and stores that carry them on FirmTech's where-to-buy map. Pharmacies, medical supply shops and adult stores also sell rings from other makers. More in the FAQ
